The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a qualified Project Manager for the Department of Facilities Management, reporting to the Director of Capital Projects. The Project Manager will be responsible for oversight and management of the design of a wide variety of assigned, architectural and interior capital projects, including new construction, extensive and partial renovations, architectural and MEP alterations, envelope, structural, and architectural repairs, landscape and site improvements, etc. Project design should align with University Design Standards, and Institutional and Campus Master Plan principles of design. Responsibilities of the Project Manager: Determines or confirms Customer (User/Funder) needs and project “scope of work”, establishes budgets and schedules and/or ensures project scope adheres to established budget and schedule, and secures funding for a project. Ensures customer understands the project management process and agree with established budgets and schedules; keeps customer updated appropriately. Confirms scope of professional design services, develops design service RFP’s, and processes Professional contracts. Manages design professional’s development of construction drawings and specifications, interacting with customers, professionals and other constituencies as required to complete a project within schedule and budget. Coordinates project requirements with relevant University departments, FM Engineering, University Architect, and reviews contract document submissions to ensure compliance with User needs, applicable codes and regulations, and the University’s Design Standards. Ensures Professionals address review comments by University departments in the contract documents, keeps track of fees and expenditures, and reviews applications for payment/invoices during design. Prepares, or coordinates final preparation of contract documents as required for bidding and construction, and manages the bidding process through to contract award. During construction, as required, performs/coordinates design review for mock-ups and submittals, unforeseen conditions, field design changes, etc., coordinates furniture and equipment purchases, and customer move management needs. Typically, the construction management function will be handled internally by others. At times, the Project Manager may manage projects from concept through construction. The Project Manager will help to ensure that all aspects of the project are executed in a safe and efficient manner. The Project Manager will maintain a working knowledge of compliance and standards, comply with procedures established in the Project Management Manual, and make recommendations for enhancements to the project management process or development of new procedures.
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Interior Design, or a related discipline is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum five years of experience in architectural or engineering design Project Management is required. Ten plus years of experience in the design/construction industry or related field is preferred. Design/Construction, Project Management experience in a higher education/institutional environment (research, laboratories, housing, classrooms, etc.), is strongly preferred. Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative environment and to lead multi-disciplinary teams. Comprehensive knowledge of current building codes is preferred. Strong verbal and written communication skills are required. Proficiency with Microsoft Suite and related programs is preferred. Experience with CPM scheduling is a plus.
