Special Note
This is a full time, overtime eligible position working in Student Wellness Services on the Olympia Campus of The Evergreen State College. This is an eleven month per year, cyclic position with July off each year (healthcare benefits paid year-round).

Position Purpose
Under the supervision of the professional medical staff, this position works in the front office and the back office of Student Wellness Services to provide medical services to currently enrolled students. Additionally, the position participates in the design and implementation of health education and outreach on campus.

Nature and Scope
The position reports to the Physician Assistant, Certified – Lead and is part of an integrated Student Wellness, Recreation, and Athletics program in the division of Student Affairs. The position may work with other offices, such as Residential and Dining Services and Student Activities to promote and encourage the success and emotional well-being of Evergreen students.

Essential Functions

  • Perform the duties of the front office, including but not limited to, greeting patients, answering phones, scheduling appointments, and managing medical records.
  • Use Triage protocol and forms to provide information to clinicians in order to facilitate appropriate appointment scheduling.
  • Perform the duties of the back office, including but not limited to, bringing patients from the waiting room to the exam room, taking vital signs, and confirming the chief complaint.
  • Under the supervision and delegation of the professional medical staff, coordinate and perform duties, including but not limited to, administering injections, venipuncture, CLIA-Waived laboratory testing, assist with procedures, and provide oversight of and instruction to Student Medical Assistants performing these duties.
  • At the direction of the supervisor, regularly review and update clinical protocols.
  • Clean rooms, stocks supplies, and provide other support functions.
  • Participate in mandatory training, including a two weeks training in September and weekly in-services/meetings throughout the year.
  • Assist student interns in providing health education to the campus community through Peer Health Projects.
  • Update patient records and input patient utilization data using database and spreadsheet programs.
  • Participate in all required meetings and committees; may facilitate staff meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to work independently while under pressure with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks requiring a high degree of accuracy.
  • Skill and ability in following clinical protocols and performing clinical procedures, including but not limited to, administering injections, venipuncture, laboratory testing and procedures, etc.
  • Skill and ability in performing front office management skills, such as greeting patients, fielding calls and questions, and gathering, processing, and disseminating accurate information.
  • Skill and ability in providing instruction and demonstrations in clinical procedures in both a front and back office environment.
  • Ability to lead the work of others, including assigning, instructing, and checking work.
  • Ability to enter patient utilization data with a high degree of accuracy using Banner and Excel spreadsheets.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology with an ability to understand and apply terms in the context of billing and utilization statistics and chart organization.
  • Excellent communication skills, such as using tact when communicating with professional and student staff.
  • Strong patient and customer service skills.
  • Ability to create, maintain, and manage appropriate medical and mental health related postings on Student Wellness Services’ social media accounts, including Facebook and Instagram.
  • Ability to work independently and to collaborate effectively with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Familiarity with Rapid Cycle change practices and quality improvement.
  • Technological skill and ability to work with standard office equipment and computer programs, such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.), relational databases, web publishing software, etc.
  • Ability to create, organize, and maintain medical records and files with knowledge of applicable legal requirements.
  • Ability to prioritize daily work, handle competing demands, and meet deadlines.
  • Understanding of multiculturalism and ability to work effectively with students and staff who are diverse in age, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, lifestyle, physical and mental challenges, sexual orientation, and political values.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to pertinent federal and state laws regarding patient privacy.
  • Familiarity with local medical and community resources for effective collaboration with external as well as internal departments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • One year experience providing direct patient care in a clinical setting, preferably in a college health clinic.
  • Experience demonstrating and/or instructing on clinical procedures.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
  • This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
  • Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080. The college will contact current and past employers to verify this information. Applicants who provide inaccurate information in their declaration will be disqualified and, if the inaccuracies are discovered after the applicant has been hired, it shall be grounds for termination.
  • Employees must comply with college policies related to masking and vaccination requirements, as well as Governor Inslee’s Proclamation 21-14.1, which requires employees of the college to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have received a medical or religious exemption prior to the first day of work.
  • Must be licensed as “Medical Assistant – Certified” (WAC 246-827-0200) or “Medical Assistant – Certified Interim” (WAC 246-827-0220).
  • Must provide proof of Hepatitis B vaccination and TST (TB test within past 12 months).
