Position Description

Advertised Job Summary
The Law Enforcement Officer I/Public Safety Officer provides law enforcement, security, and protection for the University of SC community and property. These are certified police officers in accordance with SC Code of Laws, empowered with full arrest and police authority statewide. They enforce state laws, National Advocacy Center rules and regulations, and University rules and regulations. Executes duties of a patrol officer, provides VIP detail security, and assists with critical incidents.

In emergency critical incidents, all sworn police officers are subject to recall with or without notice 24/7/365.

There is a $7,500 signing bonus for an applicant currently working either as a certified Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy or has been inactive with a law enforcement agency for less than 12 months and is able to have Class 1 Certification immediately reinstated upon hire.

Once hired, the officer will receive $1,750 after successfully completing field training, $750 after successful completion of 1st year anniversary, $2,500 after successful completion of 2nd year anniversary, and $2,500 after successful completion of 3rd year anniversary. This bonus program may be discontinued without notice, at any time. Current University of South Carolina (UofSC) Division of Law Enforcement and Safety ( DLES ) officers, or officers who have been separated from the UofSC DLES for less than 12 months are not eligible for the signing bonus.

Patrol officers are typically assigned to rotating 12-hour shifts. Currently, patrol officers assigned to 12-hour shifts receive an annual $4,000 temporary shift supplement which is not part of the base salary.

FY 2021-2022 DLES Salary Plan:
$42,510 (pre-academy)

$44,635 plus $4,000 shift supplement = $48,635 (Newly certified, and certified officers with less than 2 years police experience after initial field training)

$46,867 plus $4,000 shift supplement = $50,867 (Certified officers with 2 years of police experience)

$49,210 plus $4,000 shift supplement = $53,210 (Certified officers with 3 years of police experience)

$51,671 plus $4,000 shift supplement = $55,671 (Certified officer with 4 years of police experience)

  • Certified officers with 5 years of law experience or more, will need to apply to the Law Enforcement Officer II position.
Minimum Qualifications (Classified and Unclassified positions)
High school diploma. Must be 21 years of age and be physically qualified. Must pass a background investigation and complete the SC Criminal Justice Academy with certification as Class 1-LE or an equivalent out of state law enforcement certification.

Preferred Qualifications
Law enforcement certification must be currently active or have been inactive for only less than 12 months.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Knowledge of proper law enforcement officer behavior and role. Knowledge of modern law enforcement techniques and procedures. Knowledge of how to collect and preserve evidence. Knowledge of the Constitutionally mandated rights of both suspects and law enforcement personnel. Knowledge of South Carolina law, relevant case law, and policies of the University. Ability to exercise sound judgement within an established set of core departmental values. Knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of other law enforcement agencies. Skill in the operation of law enforcement vehicles, weapons, and communications equipment.
