Job description
Candidates must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to qualify for this role. See below for more information.
Yelp is looking for an all-star employment lawyer to join its small but nimble legal team in supporting our popular and growing consumer internet company in its efforts to connect millions of people with great local businesses. Yelp is a profitable, publicly-traded company with thousands of employees located primarily in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Germany.
This is a full-time position that can be based anywhere in the U.S. Yelp’s legal team currently has lawyers in the states of California, Illinois, Texas and Washington.

Where You Come In:

  • This role supports Yelp’s global human resources organization, providing critical counseling and support on a broad range of employment issues such as recruiting and hiring, wage and hour, performance management, investigations, leaves of absence and accommodations, employment and independent contractor classifications, and immigration.
  • The ideal candidate will have specific experience managing compliance with U.S., Canadian and European laws relating to employee privacy, pay equity, compensation, and benefits.
  • Successful candidates will also be interested in and capable of tackling new areas of law and projects for which they may not be directly responsible, allowing them to grow and develop while helping their colleagues at the same time.

What it Takes to Succeed:

  • J.D., top law school with bar admission in good standing
  • 5+ years’ experience in employment law, including handling administrative hearings and providing litigation support
  • International experience is a big plus, particularly with Canadian and/or European laws
  • Experience with laws relating to employee privacy, pay equity, compensation and benefits
  • Prior in-house experience is a plus
  • Experience working cross-functionally with multiple teams of stakeholders
  • Strong work ethic, sense of professionalism and discretion
  • Trustworthy, optimistic attitude with a willingness to roll up your sleeves
  • Excellent legal and business judgment; ability to think creatively about unique issues
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills with a rigorous devotion to detail and organization

Other Requirements:

  • You must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to be eligible for this role. Exceptions are made only where legally required.

  • The ideal candidates will also have an appreciation for the human side of employment law, and lean into the challenges associated with scaling this kind of work in a fast-paced environment and expanding geography. They enjoy the subtle (and not so subtle) differences in employment laws in different states and countries. They can turn legislative legalese into practical guidance that can be easily operationalized. They like to work independently, are good at prioritizing a wide range of projects with a wide variety of people, and are comfortable advising senior business leaders.
  • Although Yelp has grown substantially from its early days, the company prides itself on maintaining a startup culture and feel. We are looking for someone with an impressive legal background who shares our commitment to providing innovative legal solutions.
  • We strongly value cover letters as an opportunity for you to explain your interest and ability to succeed in this role rather than rehashing your resume. Also, we ask that you dedicate a paragraph of your cover letter to comment on an interesting legal topic that has recently been in the news.

What You'll Get:

  • Effective your first day: Full medical, vision, and dental (100% paid employee only coverage)
  • 15 days PTO (accrual begins on date of hire and increases with 2+ years of tenure thereafter), 7 paid wellness days, 12 paid holidays, plus one floating holiday
  • Up to 14 weeks of parental leave
  • Monthly wellness reimbursement
  • Health Savings, Flexible Spending and Dependent Care accounts
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan with employer match
  • Employee stock purchase plan
  • Compensation range is $150,000 - $200,000 annually. You may also be offered a bonus, Restricted Stock Units, and benefits
